May I just say that the black dress shown above is not only absoutely adorable in person (yes I had to try it on) but it looks great on anyone, is perfect for the holidays, and could be worn again and again. Not to mention it fits the role of the classic little black dress and is sporting one of this fall's top trends: ruffles.

2008 AMA Fashion: The good, the bad and the ugly

The stars came out for the 2008 AMA's last night and as usual on the red carpet there were those who looked goregous and those who looked... not so goregous. So we're here going to break down the good, the bad, and the ugly for the 2008 AMAs.

The Good

As with every red carpet there are those stars who just outshine the rest. The two that caught out eye were Alicia Keys, and Taylor Swift. Alicia Keys went for glamourous in a beautiful blue floor length gown with silver beading. And beading seemed to be the theme for the night with stars such as Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, and Miley Cyrus donning beaded dresses for the event. Speaking of Taylor Swift, she was the other favorite of ours for the night. She stunned in a silver off-the-shoulder sequined dress. All we can say is these girls always know how to dress for a red carpet.

The Bad

Every red carpet it's inevitable that some people are gonna show up looking less than their best. The 2008 AMAs were no exception. First up was Nicole Scherzinger, I was suprised when I found out this dress was by Project Runway winner Christian Siriano. Not that the dress was that bad but it wasn't great and it might have looked better if the skirt was just a little longer, it kind of looked like it didn't fit well. Then there was Pink. What is with the crazy print and sequins? I know sequins were big on the carpet but someone needs to show her how to wear then right. Someone might also want to show Vanessa Minnillo because her outfit was no better. Short, plunging neckline, gold sequins and sheer mesh are never a good mix. All I can say is better luck next year ladies.

The Ugly

Again as with any red carpet, there are those who are a hit and those who just miss it completely. This year Rihanna showed up in what looked like a unfinished dress. With a uneven hemline, ruffles and matching glovelets this dress was a mess. The top half wasn't bad, but the bottom was just a mess. Another mess on the carpet was Colbie Caillat. Her dress was short, stiff and green. Not only was it not flattering but it was actually made of flowers, yes flowers. The dress was made from fresh flowers the day of the award show. It was a great idea but next time please just stick with a normal dress.

Runway2Hallway's Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Ok. Halloween is this Friday and you don’t have your costume yet. Well, no problem, we have some fun costumes that you can get spending little money or from clothes you have at home.

Blast From the Past
For Halloween what’s more fun that a blast from the past. You can look totally groovy or rad by dressing 60’s or 80’s this Halloween. For 60’s grab a tie-dye shirt, old jeans, and some flip flops or boots. Straighten your hair until it’s stick straight or put it in braids the night before for some boho waves. Then add a flower child headband around the top of your head (see right) and a flower and tada! You’re totally groovy for Halloween night. For 80’s grab a oversized sweatshirt and cut it so it slouches off the shoulder (see 80's singer Cyndi Lauper left), and add bright leggings and legwarmers. Pair them with a bright colored tank (for underneath the sweatshirt) white sneakers, and some huge, bright colored hoops and you’ll be ready for a totally rad night.

Wicked Witch
Sure it’s a classic but you can put a modern spin on it to make it yours. You can use a simple black dress, or black jeans and a black tank. Pair it with black shoes, some fun jewelry and of course a witch hat, grab your broom and a wand and you’ll look go from head to toe.

Sport Star
Yea I know it sounds kinda boring, but with a few simple twists you can make a old uniform a cute costume. For a basketball player you can make it old school (like in the team seen left). Find some old 80’s cotton short shorts, and wear them with a jersey for that old school baller look. Add some knee high tube socks and classic converse for a authentic look. And of course don’t forget some sweat bands for your hair and wrists. Add a side ponytail and you’ll be ready for some old school fun. Or you can use a friend’s football jersey and go as a cute football player. Wear the jersey with some black leggings, and old tennis shoes or soccer/softball cleats (if you have them). Add some face paint, sweatbands and a football and touchdown!

These are just a few of the awesome costumes you can get from Halloween. Most of the time you can get a great costume using stuff you have at home. You can take old tired costume ideas and make them totally your own by putting your personal twist on them. All it takes is some fun accessories and a little creativity to get a totally cute costume. Runway2Hallway's Guide to Sweats

It’s winter and what’s better than going home after a long day and changing into your favorite pair of sweats? Wearing them to school for all day coziness of course! But like anything else there is a right way and a wrong way to wear sweats. So we created a guide to help you look cute while being comfy.

Rule #1: Stick to sweatpants that aren't super baggy. They can be slouchy sure, but baggy sweats make you look sloppy and careless, not to mention shorter. Straight or flare leg pants will look best. Brands that make great straight or flare legged sweats are Victoria’s Secret PINK, Juicy Couture, American Eagle aerie, and Hollister Co. Cropped sweats like the Victoria’s Secret PINK sweats shown will also work.

Rule #2: Contrast baggy and slouchy sweats with a fitted top. A fitted long sleeve tee, Henley, or tank top will balance out the slouchy-ness of the sweats. Same goes with jackets, try to keep it fitted

Rule #3: Try not to wear ratty old sweats. They’re perfect for around the house and weekends, but if you’re going to school try to wear a nicer pair (i.e. no holes, non-ratty etc.). You’ll look more put together.

Rule #4: Choose appropriate footwear. Try to stick to tennis shoes or flip flops. Mini ankle Ugg boots (or ankle sheepskin boots) are also great with sweats and super comfy. Anything nicer or dressier else might not look right.

Rule #5: Everyone knows that some days you just want to roll out of bed and walk out the door. But if you’re going to wear sweats keep it simple and pretty. Wear light, natural make-up, but put a little effort into your hair and make-up.

So get out there and rock your favorite pair of sweats. You know you'll be comfy while looking cute.

Emmy Style

The red carpet of the 60th annual Emmys was full of stars, but some shone brighter than others. Who was one of those stars? Brooke Shields (left) looked amazing in a floor length, ruffled magenta gown by Badgely Mischka. This dress rocked ruffles, one of the hottest trends for fall, while mixing it up with a bright color. Warning this dress is hot! Another shining star was Evangeline Lilly (right). She looked gorgeous in a sparkling floor length dress with geometric detail. Heidi Klum (left) once again wowed us in Giorgio Armani. The draping detail of the skirt was flawless, while the off the shoulder sleeve of the dress was genius. Debra Messing was once again a vision on the red carpet in a beautiful black gown with delicate draped ruffles, while Nicollette Sheridan stunned in a purple pleated gown (right). This Angel Sanchez gown same complete with pretty pleated detail on the bodice and skirt. Sandra Oh made jaws drop with her beautiful layered lace dress by Oscar de la Renta. The more you look at this dress the more of the flawless detail you see, this is one for the books. We couldn’t talk about best dressed without mentioning two of the ladies in gorgeous yellow, which seemed to be the color of the night. Teri Hatcher and Mariska Hagitay both were visions in yellow, Hagitay’s dress by Carolina Herrera. Last but not least, Jennifer Love Hewitt (left). Personally I like this dress, it’s different. Sure it might have looked a little bit better in two colors that didn’t have such a huge contrast, but I think she still looks great. So there’s your best dressed for the 2008 Emmys!

CW has now come out with a new online feature called CW Style. There you can pick your favorite show and character and browse through clothes featured on the show. You can browse by brand, character, product, or episode. Did you love that white goddess gown Serena wore on this season’s premiere of Gossip Girl? After patrolling the red carpet we’ve chosen who made the best and worst dressed list for the week.

Best dressed

Penelope Cruz in a gorgeous Herve Leroux gown wowed on the red carpet during the premiere of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” in L.A.

Scarlett Johansson looked amazing in a Monique Lhullier goddess gown at the premiere of her new movie “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” in L.A.

Newly single Selma Hayek shows off in a flowy Balenciaga cocktail dress at the LA premier of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”.

Leighton Meester glowed in a classy, raspberry colored dress by YSL at the Gossip Girl party at Henri Bendel in NYC.

Worst Dressed

Taylor Momsen looked like a Goth rocker in a all black ensemble. This look was all wrong for the 15 year old who looked like she was trying a little to hard at the Gossip Girl party in NYC.

Rebecca Hall dressed in Prada from top to bottom for the premiere of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, unfortunately this simple sheath dress was a little too simple for a red carpet of flowing colorful gowns. Note to self: Less isn’t always more.

Puss In Boots

Fall is quickly approaching and that means fall fashion has arrived! By now most stores have cleared out their summer apparel in favor of the new fall arrivals. There are certain wardrobe staples every girls needs for fall, but one of my favorites is a great pair of boots. Boots are a essential for fall, they are perfect to wear with jeans, pants, skirts or dresses, whatever you want. Whether you like heeled, leather, suede, fringed, or sheepskin, all are acceptable for fall. If you like your boots a little dressier then a heeled or flat leather boot will be more your style. For a great leather or suede boot that’s good quality, I’d recommend either the B.P. or Steve Madden brand at Nordstrom. They may be more expensive but they’ll hold up way better. If you like casual, warm, and comfortable then you’ll like something along the lines of a Ugg boot. Personally I wear nothing but my Uggs during the winter, but I’m quickly falling in love with fringed suede boots. Yes the look is different, but fringe is BIG this fall and fringe + boots = adorable. Also a basic pair of fringed boots adds a laid-back boho feel to any look. Minnetonka makes a adorable pair of fringed ankle boots and for $38.00 you can’t beat it. Whatever your wearing when you strut down the halls this fall and winter, as long as you have a great pair of boots on your feet you’re set.

Fall Fashion: Mad For Plaid

Plaid has always been a fall staple. It seems to be one of the few trends that is always in style. At Runway2Hallway, we went out in search of great plaid pieces that wouldn’t blow your budget. Plaid is a great print because it can be really bold and noticeable, or faded and subtle. One of the amazing pieces we found was the Plaid Shirt Dress from Forever21 (see left). Not only is this dress really cute but it can be worn by itself, or over jeans or black leggings and for only $19 it’s a steal. Another piece we loved was the Volcom Plaid Runaway Tank from Urban Outfitters. This tank is super cute and can layer great with a sweater or jacket. A great piece that puts a little twist on the classic mini is the Tildon Plaid Skirt from Nordstrom (see left). This skirt is great because you can wear it with or without tights for when it gets colder and it looks amazing with a great pair of boots. But if you thought plaid was only for clothes you’re wrong. Plaid flats are a great way to put a spin on plaid, such as the Volatile Kiltie Natural Plaid Slip-On Flats from Lulus. And at just $18 how can you say no? Another great way to wear plaid is the Plaid Bangle from Forever21, it’s a subtle way to rock the plaid trend. Finally a classic way to wear plaid is with a cute scarf, like the Golden Gate Park Scarf from Lulus. Not only does this scarf come in many colors, but at $14 it won’t break the bank. Whether it’s a plaid jacket, scarf or blouse as long as it’s plaid you’re good for fall.

Trend Alert: Fringed Accessories

Fringe has always been a fall trend, but this year it’s back on accessories. You heard me. Fringe is taking over shoes, jewelry and bags this fall. This fall it’s all about a new twist on a old trend. We went out and tracked down some of our favorite fringed pieces just for you. As far as handbags go suede bags are usually expensive, all that has changed with the Suede Fringe Passport Bag from Urban Outfitters. This is a great bag because it comes in 4 great colors and is for a great price. Another great fringed bag is the Fringed Fleece Bag (see left) from Urban Outfitters. This bag is amazing for so many reasons. One reason it’s so great is because it’s made from fleece instead of the more traditional suede fringed bags. It’s made from a vintage sweatshirt and recycled fabrics. Also this bag is a limited edition. Each bag is unique and handmade so no two bags are the same. Another great way to wear fringe is on footwear. Fringed boots are a great addition for your fall wardrobe. For example, the Fringed Short Boot by Minnetonka. This boot puts a spin on the typical ankle boot and it come in 2 classic colors. But fringe isn’t just for boots anymore, now sandals are coming out with fringe detail. Designers such as Betsey Johnson, Marciano, Jeffrey Campbell and Minnetonka are designing flats, moccasins, wedges, heels and sandals sporting fringe. A great sandal we found was the Suede Fringe T Strap Sandal from Urban Outfitters (see right). This sandal is a great way to incorporate fringe into your wardrobe and it comes 3 colors so you can pick the one you like best. Finally another way to wear fringe is jewelry. Designers such as Betsey Johnson and Morningstar are making a statement with fringed earrings and necklaces. We found a great pair of Tiered Fringed Earrings from Urban Outfitters that you can wear with pretty much everything. Whether you wear it on your feet, over your shoulder, or around your neck, all you need to know is its all about fringed accessories for fall.

Fall Fashion: Standout Jewelry

When most people think of fashion trends, they think trendy clothes, shoes, or bags. But this fall it is all about big jewelry. This year in Paris during the fall fashion shows the jewelry was to die for. From the dozens of long, layered chains seen at the Givenchy fashion show (left) to the large, strong necklaces from Balenciaga and Dries van Noten it’s all about standout jewelry for fall. If you can’t afford thousands of dollars worth of jewelry then don’t worry, we’ve selected some great necklaces that will help you standout for fall. If you want lots of layered chains like seen in the Givenchy Fall 2008 collection, then you’ll love the Leopard Necklace from Betsey Johnson. This is a very subtle version of the trend. It’s great because you can throw it on with a basic tank and jeans to add some extra style to a basic outfit. Also it has little beads that make it a more girly take on the trend. Another more subtle version of the trend is Xhilaration Multi Strand Necklace from Target. This necklace features more delicate chains for a little softer look. This is another necklace that can be used to dress up a basic tank or t-shirt. Now if you prefer shorter necklaces, but still want the layered chain look then the Circle Hoop Drop Necklace from JCPenney (right) is for you. Again this is another necklace that would go great with a basic top. Because of its length it will look best with a top that has a scoop or v neck. If you like the big oversized necklaces like seen in the Balenciaga Fall 2008 show then the Beaded Tonal Twist necklace from Target is for you. We chose this necklace because it is big and oversized, but not to the point where it covers your whole neck. Whichever piece you choose remember, for necklaces this fall it’s go big or go home.

Fall Fashion: Braiding

This Tuesday I went to the mall, and as I went along browsing through Nordstrom I took note of the trends I saw. All I have to say is that you couldn’t take more than 6 steps without seeing something with some sort of braiding detail in the clothing department. Braiding is huge this fall. Sometimes the straps of the clothing are braided, but mostly you see tops with braiding around the neckline. If you ask me it kind of reminds me of Rami from Project Runway, with all the braiding detail he put on his designs. I picked out a few great pieces with braiding detail that were my favorites.

One of the first tops I found was the Silence & Noise Printed Braid top from Urban Outfitters. I picked this top because not only was it in a cute print but it was different. Instead of the braiding being only on the neck line it travels down the back too, and for only $20 it’s a great buy. Another great find was the braid flutter top from Forever 21 (see left). Not only was it a good price for only $19.80, but it’s cute and casual which is perfect for back-to-school. A top that you can wear this summer but will still be perfect for back-to-school, is the Sparkle and Fade Braided Trim tank from Urban Outfitters (see left). Again, I love that it comes in a striped print. This top will be perfect for those warm fall afternoons when school first starts, because you won’t have to worry about getting hot. Last but not least is the Victoria’s Secret Braided Trim top. I love this top not only because of its color, but because it’s different from some of the other empire waist tops you see. Also the volume of the sleeves adds a little drama and style to any outfit. No matter which piece you choose, wear it braided and you’ll be rocking one of the biggest trends for fall.

Pleats

This fall pleats have taken over clothing racks at stores everywhere. So here at Runway2Hallway we scoured the stores to find our favorite pleated pieces. For a more casual take on pleating there is the AE Pleated T from American Eagle. Not only is it super comfortable, but AE T’s hold up well so you should be able to wear them next year. Also this particular T is versatile so you could even wear it in the spring if you wanted to. Also the pleating is subtle so it feels more casual. For something with a little more pleating there is the Kimichi Pleated Front Henley. I chose this top because it’s something you could dress up or down which means you’ll get a lot more wear out of it. To dress it up you could wear it with some slacks or dress pants and heels, or dress it down with jeans. Another great piece is the Pleated Woven Cami from Kira Plastinina. The reason I like this top is because you can layer it with sweaters and jackets, which lets you get more use out of it and more outfits. The final piece we found was the Flounce tbd Pleat Top (see top left). I liked this top because of its layers of pleating. Not to mention it comes in two different colors, so depending on which color you choose you can wear it more than one season. Weather you choose one of these pieces or one you found on your own, it’s all about pleats for fall.

Fall Fashion: Ruffles

Fall fashion has arrived, and what’s taking over the racks are ruffles, ruffles, and more ruffles. Whether it’s huge dramatic ruffles or just a few around the neckline, it’s hard to deny that they are making a splash this fall. This fall, ruffles took over the runways of designers such as BCBG and Valentino. Now you can find this style practically anywhere. We went out in search of clothing that featured this trend and narrowed down a few of our favorites. If you want your ruffles to be a little more subtle then the Robin K. Ruffled Eyelet Top is for you. We chose this top because the ruffles are more subtle, not to mention the great sheer polka dot material it was made of. This top can be dressier with nice pants or skirt and heels, or more casual with jeans and flats. Now if your want your ruffles to be a bit more noticeable then we have the top for you. The Ruffle Front Halter from Forever21 is great for fall. Since it’s a tank you won’t get hot during warm fall afternoons, but the ruffles and color show it’s strictly for fall. Now if you decide to go all out with this trend with big, dramatic ruffles, then the Fleurish Ruffle Top (see top left) is for you. I love this top because it is the definition of big dramatic ruffles, without being to over the top. Not to mention it comes in three great colors, so you can choose which looks best on you. Last but not least is the Gatsbys Ruffle Front Dress from Lulus. I love this dress because you can dress it up with a cute jacket and heels, or you dress it down by wearing it over black leggings, with flats and a cute sweater or jacket. No matter how big or dramatic the ruffles you wear, as long as you’re wearing them you’ll be fashionable this fall.

Fall fashion is here and is taking over the racks of stores everywhere. The outfits shown on the runways this spring and summer have traveled off the runways and into stores everywhere. Among the trends to be big this fall are ruffles, floral prints, classic plaid, pleats, lace, statement coats, and big, bold, jewelry. During fall fashion week ’08 this year in NYC ruffles, floral prints, plaid, pleats, and vibrant hues were all the rage for this coming season. A great example of the pleat and ruffle trend is the BCBG show in New York, where many of the dresses and jackets had delicate ruffles around the neckline. Many of the dresses and coats also featured pleating in the skirts and around the neckline. Another show the featured the ruffle trend was the Valentino collection in Paris (see left), dresses and blouses featured big dramatic ruffles. Plaid also made a statement in many shows, including the Marc by Ma rc Jacobs show. Floral prints made a splash in the Matthew Williamson show. Dresses, jackets, you name it. Clothes were covered in bright colorful floral prints and flowery accents. Vibrant fall colors were a staple in many designers’ shows. Some of the more prominent colors were red, purple, royal blue, and orange. Also in Milan this year lace and statement coats were big on the runways. A great example of how statement coats made a splash on the runway is the Mis soni Fall 2008 show, where big dramatic coats were constant on the runway. A great place to find lace this year was the Prada Fall 2008 show where lace was the main theme. Everything from skirts to dresses, to blouses were made of colorful lace. And last but not least was the jewelry from Paris. All around Paris designers were featuring huge standout necklaces. Many of the necklaces were huge and chunky, while other longer styles were piled on (see right). These are the main trends to look for when shopping for your fall wardrobe. It's the middle of July so you know what that means, the back-to-schools sales are starting. One of the larger back-to-school sales that take place this summer is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Everyone knows these type of sales get a little hectic, so to help you avoid all the madness we have given you a guide to the Nordstrom sale.

#1- Be there on time at opening time the first day of the sale. That is when they will have the most sizes, more colors, and best overall selection.

#2- Have a game plan and remember to prioritize.

#3- Have an idea of what you’re looking for before you get there.

#4- Know your size. Make sure you know your sizes in tops, bottoms, and shoes. If you know your sizes vary in certain areas, remember to keep that in mind while shopping. Also if you know you have a very common shoe or jean size, you know to go to those areas first. You can always try and shrink tops, but you can’t shrink jeans or shoes.

#5- Go to shoes first. Because you must have a sales person to help you and bring you your sizes be there first, unless you’re not planning on getting any shoes. Other wise you’re going to end up in line behind 15 people waiting for a sales person. Also because shoes sizes always go first, if you wait too long it might be hard to find your size.

#6- Go to jeans and pants second. Because it’s important that your jeans be the right size you need to be able to find the right size, style, and fit for you. Again, if you know you wear a very common jean size, you want to get there fast to be able to get the size you need.

#7- Don’t just browse. If you see something you like in your size grab it, and hold onto it. Otherwise when you go back to grab it later it might be gone. You can always put it back.

#8- Avoid having to try things on. During huge sales dressing rooms are packed, and lines waiting for them are long. If you have to hold it up to yourself and guess. If worst comes to worst give it your best guess, buy it, and try it on at home. You can always take it back and exchange it for the right size, or get your money back.

#9- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It might take a couple minuets but don’t be afraid to track down a salesperson, it will save you time and a lot of frustration. That’s their job, it’s what they’re there for. If you need help finding something they are usually able to track it down. Can’t find your size? Just ask someone. They will be able to check the backroom for you. If they still can’t find your size they are able to find which of their other stores do have it, and they can have it shipped to you.

#10- Don’t be afraid to return things. Buy what you like. Them bring it home and try it all on, make sure it fits. What you might think fits well in the dressing room, might not fit so great once you get home and try it. Match it with what you already have in your closet. Make sure you can get lots of use out of it and wear with lots of different things. If you decide you don’t like it anymore, or want a different color or size, take it back or exchange it. You’ll get your money back and feel better that that you didn’t waste it.

#11- Go more than one day. If you go the first day, wait and go again the third or fourth. As the sale continues on they gradually bring out more of what they have in stock. What you find the third day, might not have been there the first day. Not to mention the third and fourth days aren’t as hectic as the first two days.

#12- Have fun! Make a day of it. As crazy as the environment might be, relax and enjoy yourself. Sales are supposed to be fun not stressful. It doesn’t matter what or how much you buy, it’s about how much fun you have while doing it.
